Opera Night by Rich Massabny:
A couple of Sundays ago, I stopped in at a long established Italian restaurant in Old Town Alexandria called TRATTORIA DA FRANCO, owened by chef Franco Abbruzzetti. My initial interest was to hear tenor Mike Blaney at Trattoria"s monthly Opera Night. B;aney is well-known in these parts, including The Washington National Opera, for both his classical and Broadway works. With him that night was a lovely and talented soprano Amy Allen And Russel Wilson on piano. This trio-and occasionally with Chef Franco vocals, put on a most pleasing of songs. In addition,Trattoria offers a tasty and authentic Italian buffet to go along with the evening's entertainment. The restaurant's manager, Angelica, ensures a smoothly run evening. The next Opera Night is Oct-25. http://www.richmassabny.com/

What a party! One evening truly to remember.
I had the wonderful experience of having 15 friends join me on Inauguration Day to have dinner at Franco's before heading to the Little Theater. Franco and his staff put us in a private dining room with a lit fire and promptly brought around bottles of Chianti and Chardonnay while we stood and conversed before we sat down. Once we sat down, without having to ask, Franco and his staff started bringing out a medley of appetizers for everyone to share. Dinner followed, and my guests all raved about the sauces Franco had specially prepared. One of my guests had brought his daughter along. It was her 18th birthday! Franco had a cake made in her honor, and had one of his "resident" opera singers serenade her! The father was so thrilled he sent me a special thank you note. It was a dazzling evening and Franco worked hard to make it special for everyone.
Many of my guests are now looking forward to coming back for Opera Night. My husband and I have been several times and have always had fun! Franco's restaurant has always been one of our favorite eateries, but this evening was truly one to remember! It is very authentic right down to the decor! Next time you want a special place for a special event, think of Trattoria da Franco.

Better than an Italian grandmother's kitchen!
I read some of the other reviews, and wondered if I had eaten at the same restaurant. My two visits to Franco's were fantastic. I felt like I was back in Europe. The atmosphere is truly transforming carrying me back to small family run affairs where everything is good, and a house wine is actually drinkable.
The service is amongst the most friendly you will find. The staff was helpful with everything from appetizer selection to recommendations about the neighborhood. Franco's has a little bit of a disorganized feeling about. It is not the letter perfect place where every fold is perfect and every action is timed. It is a little chaotic and has a buzz about it that only adds to the feeling of a family run Italian restaurant run by real Italians, not pretenders slinging pasta and cheese sauce strained through a sieve of generic strip mall hell. The food is probably the most authentic Italian food in Alexandria. It smells your Italian grandmother's kitchen only better. Franco's probably is not for everybody. But if you want authentic Italian food in a fun atmosphere served by genuinely nice people, give it a try.

Great finding!
"I have lived in Old Town for nearly 5 years now and have been missing a wonderful dining experience the entire time. Great Italian food at very good prices. A nice wine list and terrific service. Lasagna was great, ravioli got rave reviews and I need to figure out how to order the pizza and try the Osso Bucco next time." michaelpaulmeyers Washingtonpost.com City Guide 2008
